Crossing the Andes for the Last time..

After our superb weeks boarding in Las Leņas we took a bus up to Mendoza in the heart of Argentinia's wine making country. Mendoza is a very relaxing town and thats exactly what we did - relaxed for a few days having lunches in the sunshine and partying by night. 'Facundo' restaurant on Sarmientas near the main plaza was so good we went there twice for superb steak, pasta & morcilla (blood sausage - similar to black pudding but more succulent). The second time we went Paul ordered chivito (goat) and got a huge side of the animal which was really tasty!! We tried to take a bus across the Andes to Santiago but after spending 3hrs in the bus station we were told the pass was closed due to nieve y hielo (snow and ice), just as it had been the previous day. In winter sometimes the pass is closed for 10 days at a time but luckily we got through the next day (Monday) at our second attempt - just before it closed again later that day!!! It was a relief to make it across by bus as the flights are about 110 pounds (US$200) but the journey took 10 and a half hours instead of the usual six including 2hours at the Chilean border. We now have 5 days in Santiago - our last days on the South American mainland after nearly 8months here which seems to have flown by...
