After a week of busy beaches and chock a block streets in Rio we decided to take it easy on the relaxing island of Ilha Grande (about 3 hours south of Rio). As we arrived the weather took a turn for the worst and it ended up raining for a full 24 hours non stop. We were not deterred by the rain (as hardy English people being used to it!!) and stayed on the island for 4 days enjoying the spooky ruins of a derelict high security prison, walking on the trails round the island and visiting several of the bays on a boat trip. Tried to snorkel but the visibility wasn't great and as the weather still wasn't great we decided to drink Caiphiri cocktails on the boat and read our books.. very nice!! After Ilha Grande we headed a bit further south on the mainland to the coastal colonial town of Paraty. It's a very pretty town with lots of white colonial buildings, nice churches, cobbled streets and great view across the bay of lush green tree covered islands with small golden sand bays dotted along the coastline. We spent the day on a nearby quiet beach today and drank our 50p big bottles of beer in the sunshine... finally a day without rain!!! The skimpy bikini meant that I (Mandy) ended up with a bit of a red bum but at least it's not white anymore...
