Hiking Fitz Roy, Patagonia

El Chalten is a small village 5hrs away from El Calafate. We spent 3 great days here hiking around the Parque Nacional Los Glaciers which, amazingly, is free to everyone. The mountains and scenery are stunning with granite towers rising above the snow-covered mountains and glaciers. The high-altitude lakes were a beautiful turquoise colour and the trees were changing from greens to yellows and reds as it is Autumn time. The first main walk we did with John and Kelly took us to Laguna de Los Tres with great views of FitzRoy and took about 9hours round trip including a picnic at the lake with red wine. After a relaxing day recovering we did another long walk to Laguna de Torres which was equally beautiful, although the Torres were partly hidden by clouds and it was really windy. The lake here had huge chunks of ice floating in it and a glacier at the opposite end. On both the walks we saw Magellanic Woodpeckers which were really big with bright red heads and good fun to watch. Our pictures show the scenery better than it can be described and Patagonia is possibly the most spectacular landscape that we have seen so far on our trip.
