At great expense and with considerable reluctance I hired a driver to take me to see the cultural triangle north of wasgamuwa.

The day didn't start off to well. When we arrived at Polonnaruwa the driver took me straight to the museum. I tried to explain that I wanted to go to the guest house to drop my bag, have a cup of tea and hire a bike. Anyway, we couldn't understand each other and it was all very confusing. We did get to the guest house but the driver seemed very annoyed and I wasn't sure why.
I hired a bike and spent an enjoyable morning cycling between the ancient and mossy buddhist temples, each replete with huge breast shaped stupas (dagobas). The large rock carved buddahs were very impressive (Gal Vihara).

The next morning we were friends again, mainly because I'd worked out that if you let the driver take you to his favourite hotel he gets free food and accomodation.
