I've mostly been staying in the Newtown area of Sydney. Newtown is a quirky neighbourhood, a bit like Brighton's North Laine with lots of interesting shops, cafes & bars, populated by goths and lesbians - and Harriet with her boyfriend.
The food at these cafes was delicious - grilled pumpkin is curiously popular - even with a veggie breakfast.
Many of the houses in Newtown are old colonial era workers houses. They are narrow fronted with overhanging eaves and balconies for shade. They're very pretty - but I sadly I haven't any photos to show you!
I've been to the local boozer and tried both Coopers and VB
I developed a little obsession with the botanic gardens and have been 5 times during my stay. They're fantastic! The gardens extend to the harbour edge and have great views across the harbour. The plants are pretty good too.
In the evening the grey-headed flying fox bats that roost in the gardens fly across the park and transform the night sky into a view of gotham city. Apparently the baby bats spend the first few weeks suckling from a nipple in the mother's wing pit and cling on to her when she flies out to feed each night. As the bats can range up to 50km in a night this is pretty impressive.
