We flew into Colombo and had one night before transferring early for our drive to Pinnawala to visit an elephant orphanage.
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is the largest in Sri Lanka and looks after about 120 elephants. Unfortunately due to contact with humans and the human scent the elephants cannot be released back into the wild but instead spend their days here. The orphanage is pretty big with a separate section for injured elephants then a larger section for the elephants to roam around the forest grounds.
They have one elephant that lost one foot when he stepped on a land mine during the war here.
The elephants are taken down to the river to bathe twice a day and it's great to see.
