My second time to Bangkok and Marks first. A buzzling city full of street stalls, night markets, restaurants and shops. Luckily the protests all seem to have calmed down a bit and unless you wander to the protest areas you really wouldn't know it is happening.
We stayed in a hotel on the river front which is a really good location as you are away from the hectic city and the hotels all offer a boat shuttle to take you into the main areas.
The city seems to have changed quite a bit since I was last here 5 years ago.
The sky train is a good way to get around as well as the boats. Taxis are really cheap here you just have to be careful with the traffic. Tuk Tuks are also a popular mode of transport here.
Along the river are a good selection of hotels and restaurants and a really good night market.
We had afternoon tea at the Mandarin Oriental which was gorgeous, lots of good quality food, great value and an amazing setting. That evening we headed to Calypso Bangkok Theatre on the riverfront to watch a 'ladyboy' show - great fun!
The following day we had a full day sightseeing tour. We visited Ayutthaya a world heritage site with palaces and temples and returned back to Bangkok by boat along the Chao Phraya river.
We visited Bang Pa-In Palace - the royals summer palace and three temples, Wat Maha That, Wat Na Phra Mane and Wat Lokayasutharam.
