A beautiful beach, a busy town, far too rich for most Brazilians to enjoy and yet the poor people are just a few blocks away from the richness of the beach-line tower blocks The apartments on the front promenade stretch along the whole five kilometers length of the wide sandy bay that is guarded by several mountainous islands along the Atlantic arched horizon. Opulence oozes from the seafront hotels and apartments that are quietly protected by armed security men that open the electronic gates once the guests or owners are recognised.
Along the shoreline, (that is raked and cleaned each morning before we visitors even arise), the keep-fit joggers in their fashionable shorts and labelled tops disturb the few pigeons that scavenge the flotsam of the latest tide. Many of the ladies wearing excuses of bikinis that are termed "dental floss" liven up the old men such as myself, there are no topless ladies, this would not be acceptable in such a religious country, but the coverings of their swimming/jogging gear can only be spotted if the wearer passes close by, hence several males can be seen walking slowly along the water´s edge.
Unlike other countries on this huge continent Brazil does not siesta thus the evening meal is taken early, about six or seven and by soon after eleven o´clock everything is quiet. The night life here in Santos, (the rich seaside holiday resort for the wealthy Sao Paulo people), is either very well hidden or non existent. Perhaps that explains why there are so few travellers and hostels, the beach is one very good reason to stop off here and relax for a few days even if it is expensive, Vera and I managed three days chilling out after our adventures and even caught the sun before heading off on the final night ride to Rio where we will stay for two more nights before our flight back to London.
There was one spell of a few minutes that made my stay worthwhile. I was watching a typical Brazilera with blonde hair and an excuse of a swimsuit playing in the breaking waves and enjoying the warmth of the day, on catching my eye she posed a little then with a big smile blew me a Marilyn Monroe style kiss. What a wonderful way to end the stay at Santos.

Next stop is Rio for two nights before we return to the UK and the warmth of late April !
Keep happy on the road all you people that I leave behind to face the Brazilian winter.
