Since I have been traveling I have always tried to taste the local dishes. As a fervent meat eater, (married to a feminist, lefty, veggie), it gives me a chance to please my taste. To date there has been no adverse problems of`stomacher or sickness, it is all going rather well.

The menus are of course in Portuguese or Spanish, they might as well be in Greek or Chinese as far as my understanding them.  My method is to pick a number on the menu, it could be 3, 13 or 28, providing the price is within my budget any number will do.( I believe that is real pot luck.)

Anyone who knows me, or has tried to feed me, is aware that in the UK my taste is just a little restricted, some may say fussy just because things like root veg, rice, cheese, spices,  hot things, stews, squid, and even wine and spirits are not to my taste.

Anyway away from home anything goes and most of it is unrecognizable anyway because it`s usually cooked in a light batter.  What you may think is a sausage turns out to be a fish or even a banana, sometimes it is some unknown root like an odd onion but far less hot.
The point of this screed is that my tongue that normally serves me so well with it`s different functions, (of taste, licking and being very agile at wagging and talking), has lost it`s sense of direction and it`s basic sense of knowing exactly where it is. Obviously it`s in my mouth but whenever trying these new dishes it seems to completely forget just where my teeth are and to add injury to insult it ignores their closing tightly on each other at very regular intervals.  The result is getting to be a very frayed tongue and quite frankly, if it wasn`t for the pain it suffers along with me, I would say it serves it right.  So there!

If you are coming to Foz I`ll make a special effort to be there early. Did my family press you? They know how to get me to do what they want. Great to hear from you, Peter T. XXX
