IIHO DO MEL off paranagua.
Entry 21 of 54 | show all | print this entry |
Iiho do Mel Island just off Paranagua This eco island is not going to last, we tourists have created a market place that will grow as long as we make demands to be fed and housed on this tropical little heaven. My wanderings of the mind on the beach. Sand dollar shells crumble to powder as I try to pick them up. Small iridescent mother of pearl shells show their changing colours as I pass them by. A small island that is a mile offshore sits on it`s silvery white baseline of a sandy shore and shimmers in this summer heat, All noise is drowned by the constant roar of the breaking south Atlantic surf. after an hour or so I climb over the high dunes I find the shade of a large spreading broad leafed tree to sit under and listen to the voices of nature. Different bird calls, mostly unknown to me, some are shrill and repetitive, others a mere tweeting like a chic pestering to be fed. Small raven coloured, wren sized, birds scamper around busily seeking some unlucky insects for their dinner. Nearby are two sedate long legged crane like birds, about the size of large gulls, they have four chicks who appear like gangally teenagers unable to cope with their rapidly lengthening limbs, they rush around wobbling ungainly contrasting to the regal steps of their elegant parents. A large butterfly slowly passes on it`s erratic route, rising, dropping and swerving, how can it arrive at it`s chosen destination? Moving on slowly, passing on a walkway through the mangroves trees my mind is jerked back into the reality of this world, the source is the sound of a lawn strimmer. Further on the music, (that the players always believe the world about them should share), blares forth, then the stalls, the cafes, the shops, bars and restaurants all seeking my custom. I choose one that is quiet even though it compares to a 1950`s long distant lorry drivers breakfast stop. The food is good, salad, chips and a load of shrimps,(wrapped of course in the inevitable thin batter), all washed down with a coke. cost, just 12rs. Throughout the meal I have to concentrate on the food as a continual stream of young things come and go partially dressed in very little, practically all could be better covered with my paper napkin torn into four pieces to cover their essential parts. I don`t object even though I carefully donned my shirt before entering the premises! A stocky Italian man talks to me, he lives in New York and has just invested half a million dollars to have a house built in a local town and is complaining about the powers that be ignoring the Brazilian laws. Listening to him I get more and more convinced that he is a major soldier in the mafia, probably high up in the Correnelli family. He talks on getting more and more aggravated and agitated. " I spend half a million frigging bucks building a frigging house in a good area and some frigging local politician give a local frigging businessman permission to put a frigging warehouse on my border. They make laws about residential areas then tell me that they don`t frigging come in until frigging January." As he goes on I nod here and there in sympathy, I don`t want him to get too frigging excited. He tells me about the US laws and how being an English guy I would understand that the law is the law. I feel like saying `forget-about -it` but don`t take the gamble. After some time complaining he departs, shakes my hand vigorously saying that he`s enjoyed our conversation, I nod some more and return to my food still trying not to be distracted by the "itsy bitsy tinny winny bikinis" that still mill around.
QUITE A DAY ON THE QUIET ISLAND. Best wishes to you all, Peter T.
