Uruguayan bay bathed by the searing sun,
washed by the gentle remains of the South Atlantic waves,
cooled by the gentle off-sea breeze.
The fine sand, like powder between your toes,
the water"s edge then contrasting cold as it rinses your feet.
Families play beach games not seen before
but they are familiar to the mind,
balls and flat wooden discs, given pitches,
edge lines scratched in the darker damp sand mark clear boundaries.
Footballs ring bouncing on the harder sand
or fall silent on the silver powder.
Grannies under bright coloured parasols.
Granddads on candy striped folding beach chairs.
Children of all generations dig to foil the rising tide.
Youths play football with Uruguayan skill,
girls play with equal skill, unaware of their bikinied beauty.
Behind the beach the palm treed promenade,
backed by hotels that show signs of past economic collapse.
But their future is bright with their children,
with their pride and faith in their country, with their pride in themselves.
This is an individual scene, similar to many others but it is certainly different from anything else I have ever seen.--- Uruguay, I like you!
