Just one week and I feel I am getting into this backpacking game, it ls the compromise of comfort and cost. I don't mind budgeting with the lumpy bed or the rather sparse breakfasts as long as I am experiencing a different culture.
The 5/6 hour bus ride from B.A. to Mar del Plata was even better than the flight over here, comfortable, plenty of space to stretch out and even a film to watch, all for the price of about 10 pounds that included a packed lunch.
The hostel is The Galeon hotel, a defunct hotel that now caters for travelers at the price of 20 Peso (under 4 pounds)and that includes breakfast, towels and linen. At this rate I can go on for months without hurting the budget. A coffee costs around 50pence and a large (650 ml) beer only 1 pound in a bar or 40 pence in a supermarket, makes drinking beer more economical than coffee! Meals are roughly under half the cost in the UK and their steaks are at least double the size or more, wonderful.
As for the locals they are friendly, helpful and try so hard to communicate when posed a question, many of the younger ones (and schoolchildren) are only too pleased to try out their linguistics on us foreigners. This country is a great place to spread my wings, even feels safe for a slow old fellow like me.
Take heart all of you and keep "atroshing"
