The frantic three nights
Entry 26 of 33 | show all | print this entry |
Almost a week has passed since leaving Rio and this is the first time fingers have touched computer keys to tell all about the manic Rio Carnival.
Friday It started on Feb 16th, the night children from all the local dance schools parade through the samba drome and this year Lisa was right down there with them. An amazing experience to watch my daughter walk that famous road. It had been an arduous journey reaching the ballet teacher´s house because the roads were closed for the many street parties, at one stage the 8 of us trying to traverse the steep roads had to link hands in order to make our way through the partying throng. All very good hearted and colourful. The children in Lisa´s group were wearing costumes twice the size they were, large white skirts swaying a couple of feet away from tiny legs, large gold head dresses weighing them down, but each one rising to the occasion and enjoying the fun of dressing up for the occasion.
Saturday... Maracana Stadium The lovely Simon organised our trip to this famous stadium to see two local teams battle it out in the local league. Simon booked our tickets; he is large, has dark black skin and a loud booming voice which echoes around his internet cafe as we type ... this in several languages. He is fluent in English, French and Portuguese, passable in German and I think Spanish. He is often heard (he is impossible to ignore) as he explains various flight information to clients, who rarely seem to get the message first, second or even third time so the same stuff is churned out over and over. Not only did Simon obtain our tickets he accompanied us on the metro to the stadium.
Maracana had intrigued me as I watched it from the metro each day on my way to school, large round and dark blue with wide walk ways leading to the arena. From both the Cristo Redentor stature and the Sugar Loaf the dark blue contrasted wonderfully with the velvet green of the well loved turf.
On this night the carnival claimed more visitors so the stadium was fairly empty, but the metro was still noisy and crowded with excited fans thumping the ceiling and chanting loudly as we went. The match was exciting too, with a 3/1 score at half time and a 4/4 draw at the finish, with us joining in with the shouts and calls of encouragement and derision. A wonderful evening finished off at the ´Yellow Place´ with a couple of Caparinhas, served by the delightful Mr Pinkwhistle. (remember him from Enid Blyton stories ... this guy earned the name).
That´s enough for now, taken a long time to get this done but there have been 3 weeks of travel since and my fingers haven´t touched keys except for quick emails to that intrepid traveller I married some 45 years ago, miss him like crazy, but he will be here in Foz on April 1st. (I started this 2 weeks ago)
Take care one and all, special love and hugs for Lynne. Keep on fighting Lynne, we love you. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
