Finally a day where we didn't have much planned. We met up with Chrissy in the morning at her place and drove to Tawharanui Beach to just lounge around and enjoy the sights.

The trip there was eventful enough however, as we had to take a stretch of narrow gravel roads where Chrissy seemed to be having WAY too much fun trying to scare Martijn with high speeds and sharp bends AT high speeds!
A little further down the road she displayed an unusual trait that we later noticed other New Zealanders doing as well. She stopped along side the road to move a rather large rock off the road that was a bit of a hazard to traffic. We both felt was rather unusual as neither of us can really remember seeing anyone show that much concern for other road users in our home countries. We believe people there would dodge the object and continue quite happily on their way, since it was no longer a problem to them... (Weird social Kiwi behaviour!)

At the beach we had a nice time just wandering around and taking pictures of the pretty surroundings. It was surprisingly quiet and calm there considering the weather we had that day.

The rock formations that we climbed and hopped across are dotted by big and small pools of water. Some are quite deep and they almost look inviting enough to climb in to. We are not sure if they filled because of big waves crashing over them or if they are submerged during high tide, but they are absolutely teeming with life. (To us they also look like brilliant hottub designs made by mother nature... Minus the electricity to produce the bubbles :P)

While wandering around we saw (and were educated about by Chrissy) large collections of mini-mussels (MICRO-mussels almost really) sticking to various rock-surfaces. They are only about 5-6mm long, but there really are HUNDREDS of them covering the rocks like a carpet of sorts.
To make a meal out of them you would probably need several thousand.

After spending several hours enjoying the beach (and exhausting ourselves with all the physical effort of rock hopping :P) we went to Matakana. There we had some fries at the local pub and then some delicious ice cream across the street at a place called "Blue".

And that concluded another relaxing day that turned out to be exhausting :P

P.S. Sorry we forgot to mention it before, but our tripod has been recovered. So all is well again with the luggage... :)

rocky road...
btw you should try some 'rocky road' confectionery if you see any here :) As for large rocks...well as the owner of an OLD car that barely clears the kerbs on most pavements due to its proximity to the ground I get nervous when I see LARGE SOLID objects in the road :P. I wasn't trying to scare Martijn either I was driving half my usual speed :P !!
