While we are here in Wellsford we're doing various day-trips. And todays expedition is underwater...

"Kelly Tarlton's" is an aquarium in Auckland where the founder and creator (a dude named Kelly Tarlton) re-designed a stretch of sewer-pipes to function as an underwater world for visitors to enjoy.

It may not be the biggest aquarium in the world, but walking through the pipes and being surrounded by sharks while the famous Jaws tune plays does have its appeal :P Whenever the Jaws tune played Trude would just HAVE to look behind her JUST IN CASE!!!

The full name of the place is Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World and that was made real by us going on a little automated tour in a modified Snowcat (a vehicle designed to traverse open icey plains) past groups of King Penguins. It started off rather cheesy though with going through a small tunnel with a fake snowstorm... We left a good meter of snow in Norway a few weeks ago now, but we haven't been gone long enough for a rotating tube of styrofoam to impress us with its 'chill-factor' :P

Beyond the underwater tunnel (which even had a moving walkway for the properly lazy people :P) and the penguin ride there were of course many tanks and areas filled with fish and other funky sea creatures... We even saw a HUGE stingray (2 meters in width and a few hundred kilograms) being fed by a guy standing in the tank with four of these behemoths surrounding him.

Martijn enjoyed seeing a pufferfish that he could get up close and personal with... He even managed to not startle it :P

Afterwards, when heading back to the car to drive back to the hotel, we encountered the most dangerous animal so far... The land shark! (aka VW Beetle)

Hey Martijn and Trude,

Hope you enjoy your time in NZ. Judging from your pictures and stories I don't have the impression you will ever get bored. I wonder how many pics you will be taking back home. (we took about 2500 of em...:s )

Have fun and take care!

PS wait till you get to the south island...:D

snowstorm !
yup - at least a year of planning and saving enough euros to come to NZ from Norway - to visit a tourist attraction that begins with a fake snowstorm and ends with a fake Orca (I must admit the irony escaped me until it actually happened *blush*) !! :D The penguins at least WERE cool tho a tad smelly :)
