We arrived at the National Park and checked in at the Mercantile
. Obviously, the National Park campgrounds were designed for tents, not for oversized motorhomes like ours but they do have a limited number of spaces that we can fit. Some were already taken but we managed to find one that was easy to back into and has room for the car right in front of the camper in the same spot. We also realized after the fact that it is right next to the trail that connects to the trail system in the area of the Visitor Center, Mercantile, and Wilderness Center. From those places the hiking trails branch out so it's very easy to navigate.
Denali National Park has one road into the Park and it's 93 miles long, but personal vehicles are only allowed on the first 7 I think. There is a bus system that will take us some time to figure out.
We got the camper organized and bonus---we have wi-fi at our spot. I know they have it at the Mercantile also. After we ate dinner we went to the Campfire Program at the Amphitheater. The ranger talked about the kinds of wildlife in the Park: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, sheep, lynx and wolves. I always find it very interesting to learn about the culture and history of an area when we visit there.
We left the Festival right after breakfast with the intention of stopping at a Trading Post along the way. The ad said they sold homegrown organic produce and gave free coffee. They also had a display of wildlife including a huge polar bear. The place was immaculate, but the people in charge of the gardens were not there so we couldn't get any vegetables. The guy working was very nice but he had forgotten to turn on the coffee machine that morning so there was no free cup of coffee. They had more local crafts than any ot the other gift shops that we had been to so that was impressive, but I wasn't sure that I had a yearning for any of them. It was still fun to look. I did spot a little hooded sweatshirt that matched the hat I got for Mark and Krystin's baby so got that. We picked up a box at the next post office and mailed it right away---how surprised they will be to get it in the mail so soon after his birth!
