We left Hazen right after breakfast thinking we were ready to start relaxing, so after driving for a few hours we decided to stop at the Painted Canyon overlook. We had noticed that the tires on the tow vehicle were squealing when we turned so Wayne and Anthony checked that but it seemed to be doing what it was supposed to do....following the motorhome down the road! Wayne and I and Porter decided to get a National Park Passport and get it stamped. Wayne and I had gotten one several years ago but I haven't kept it up and couldn't find it when I looked for it before we left so got a new one. Porter got his first Junior Ranger badge at the Knife River Indian Villages NHS on Monday and realized the requirements for a second one at Teddy Roosevelt NP were within reach so we did a few requirements and then stopped at the Visitor Center in Medora to complete it. He was ecstatic...his friend Tusker had gotten one recently but now he had two!
Porter and I played some dice and we rotated seats several times throughout the day. In mid-afternoon Anthony drove for awhile and Wayne took a nap but the camper seemed like it was all over the road. At first he thought it was just getting the feel of it but it didn't seem right to any of us. Looking back, we realized that we may not have had the tow vehicle locked securely as the next day Anthony noticed that it was going back and forth until they fixed that problem.
We took quite a bit of time stopping at the Painted Canyon and Medora so decided we had to drive later than usual in order to get far enough that we could still make it to Twisp, WA the following evening. We are delivering my brother Jerome's basket of goodies that he won in the raffle at the Thiel Reunion. He had ridden his motorcycle to ND so couldn't take it back with him. I knew we were going to be taking Kristin, Anthony and Porter to Port Townsend and thought it would be a good excuse to drive the North Cascade Highway in WA which we traveled through by train but never driven.
We found a Montana state park that was near Three Forks, MT but didn't realize it would be dark by the time we got there. We got off the Interstate, ended up missing the turnoff to the campground within the State Park, drove through some plant site and fortunately found a place large enough for the camper to turn around and get back to where we started! The campground host heard us come in (that diesel is sooooo loud it would wake anyone!) and came out. She very nicely pointed us to a spot we could park and we all crashed for the night.
