What a great boat ride, really beautiful comfy ride up river with a few westerners, some of which I kept in contact with.

Meung Ngoi is a very small village but with a steady influx of tourists who stop for the now almost predictable amazing limestone surrounding mountains and also to continue upriver and then on to either China,Thailand or Vietnam so it was a popular and useful route.

There was a group of 3 girls; Bel from England, Ciara from Milan and Eva from Germany and we all stayed at the same bungalows. I spent the afternoon walking round snd found the school. It was pretty run down and the library was book less just as Peter the Oz ex monk told me but it was a decent building and good starting point but term time was over so I couldn't chat to anyone but atleast got a feel for the ace... Good and beautiful but the tourist part I decided was a negative, the beauty of the original riverside village was the isolation and pure time in s village with the villagers only. It was food for thought though and something to dwell have meditate on that one...;)

So that night I met the three girls for dinner and them headed back. We only had electricity from 6pm - 10pm but got back at 9.50pm to find it off so Bel crashed and us3 played cards on my porch. What playing I learned one the most invaluable pieces of information not only on this trip but in my lifetime... At one point I said 'touch wood' and explained what it meant to which they both gave their equivalents but Ciara also added the invaluable info. She was so Italian in was untrue, just before the girl in the bungalow came out containing about the noise and called her a bitch and she just shrugged, did a 'forget aboud'it face and said 'don't stress, you have a boyfriend in there ( meaning In her room, which she did), you should be making love, not stress' - what a reply eh?! Think I fell in love at that very moment ;)

So anyway the invaluable info..., she told me that when Italian guys say the equivalent of touch wood or just wish themselves well or good luck or just in conversation want a good outcome then you know what they do ? ... They grab their nuts! Yep... all these years of watching Italian movies; Goodfellas, Casino, Mean Streets etc etc that's what grabbing nuts meant; like me you'll never watch Goodfellas the same way again..!

Next day I was gonna head back to Nong Khiaw and them round to the border but they were heading up river and asked me to join but I stuck to the route as I only had 5 days but wish I'd have gone for a day or too now esp since I only got Eva's email but lost it. Oh well, like the littlest hobo I'll just keep on movin on...
