The bus dropped me off an hour outside of Surabaya in the end, so after a five hour bus journey, I now have to pay more for the taxi to the city than I did for the whole journey so far. Madness,

Surabaya is a strange city. Being a bit like Jember, there is so much going on, yet nothing actually going on. There are roads everywhere, giant 6-lane freeways and buildings all over the place, but I really struggled to find any shops or anything interesting to look at. Going for a walk I found a night market with a million stalls selling fruit and vegetables, but having no cooking facilities this was fairly useless to me. Other than that, I walked for probably an hour and only found one restaurant and one shop. Settling into the Chinese restaurant I ate my meal while attempting to master chopsticks, whilst being treated to live music from a local band who looked like they were from a nearby school, and sounded like it too.

I don't have many photos of Jember and Surabaya as I only take photos of scenes which inspire me and nothing inspired me in either of these cities. I am not in the habit of taking photos just for the sake of it, so unfortunately both of these chapters are a little bit thin on aesthetics, just like the cities which they represent.

That’s pretty much all I can say about Surabaya. I did eventually find a mall on my way out of the city, but it was on its own, with nothing around it. Still, I managed to replace my headphones so this made me happier and more prepared for my next Train journey to Solo, which, being one of the bigger and more famous cities of Java, should actually have something to see…. Hopefully.
