I LOVED Montreal. Loved it. Haute couture, trend setting cuisine, and an almost complete lack of the pretentious attitude that keeps their cross-Atlantic counterparts in Paris from being more....highly regarded worldwide (personally I had no problems in Paris, but I'm just calling a spade a spade here). The only thing that even came close to bugging me in Montreal was the same thing that bugs me wherever I travel- other American tourists. My God. I'm by no means perfect, but I could teach a class to some of my fellow country people. 1. No one is put on this earth to serve you no matter HOW much money you have, and 2. A small attempt at adaptation goes along way. When you leave the U.S. you have left the U.S. try to remember that and learn how the other side does things. We follow these guidelines to a fault and after people gave us almost even 50/50 reactions on Montreal, our experience? Maybe the closest to perfect we have ever experienced. Everyone was amazingly friendly, helpful, and gave us great advice on where to eat and what to do. the Metro was simple to follow and fast, and gave us really cool access to the underground. Essentially a 4 story underground shopping mall, but pretty cool nonetheless. We consumed poutine until I swear we thought we had gravy coming out of our pores. Hotel Chez Swann was ultra chic, almost risque in it's anonymity boutique hotel, with comfy furnishings and a shower room-shower. ROOM. in the bathroom. (yeah, this inn was meant for playing alright). Basilique de Notre Dame near rivaled Notre Dame de Paris in it's beauty, and be sure to check out the chapel in the back-very cool modern Catholic. Montreal-I have not wanted to move somewhere instantly so bad in my entire life.
