Howdy from the bay below Hearst Castle.

We had another uneventful run down from Monterey.  We left the dock at 0600 just before the sun came up.  We dropped anchor in San Simeon Bay literally moments before total darkness at 7:30 and just as the full harvest moon rose above the distant mountain ridge.  The wind predictions had finally come down and were forecast to be 10-20 knots from the NW.  It should have been a delightful downwind sail. Unfortunately once again there wasn't enough wind to sail and not get thrashed about.  We unfurled the sails in a valiant attempt but those big waves were too much.  Imagine being inside a washing machine.  That's what it's like onboard in those conditions but without the water, soap or conditioner of course.

On the last bit of the journey down we could see Hearst's castle perched up on a hill surrounded by greenery.  We didn't realize how much it looks like a castle.  The anchorage sits below it and the shore is now mostly state park.  We had planned to visit what Hearst always called the ranch but the wind changed in the middle of the night and blew into the bay from the SW.  Sleeping was a challenge as the boat rolled side to side.  Imagine trying to hold onto a mattress that is wildly tipping from one side to another.  We don't know what your bed is like but ours didn't come with any handholds.  In the morning the weather was no better.  Leaving the boats unattended on a lee shore was not a good idea so we hoisted the anchors and headed off to the south.  We''ll have to visit Hearst Castle the conventional way, by car.

Next stop Morro Bay.
