I headed out of Mississippi yesterday around 8am, passed through Memphis, TN, turned left and entered Arkansas. BTW - although I didn't stop - the Buffallo River looked spectacular as did the Ozarks (I took the back roads). Hit MO early afternoon and past the tony area of Branson (gotta go back there!). I wanted to push it to make it into Kansas before dark to a beautiful park (so I thot) - Elk City Lake in Independence. At nearly 550 miles and at 6:50pm, I pulled into the Park, except it was underwater. The dam had overflowed and the whole park was about 4 feet under. No signs, no warnings. I had to back up on a narrow dirt road for about 1/2 a mile to get out.
So, instead of pressing on, or sleeping at WalMart, I gotta room. Played it pretty close, but it was fun.
This morning I'll make another haul to Hastings, Colorado. Then I'll spend the long Memorial weekend at Black Canyon in Gunnison, Colorado. It was about the only thing left in the state.
Oh, when/if you pass through the Ozarks, you gotta get some of their smoked meat. They know what they are doing.
