My morning didn't start off particularly well. This delhi belly of mine had gone into Day 5. My personal stash of gastro medicine had failed me. The local medicine I bought at Pushkar was fast depleting however it appeared to have given me greater confidence than my personal stash from Melbourne.
All the locals I had spoken to, advised me to consume more plain curd which is very readily available from the streets. I had some for breakfast but seriously I rather eat toothpaste. At this point, I had completely changed my habit of rinsing my mouth with tap water and started using bottled water instead. My Indian friends in Melbourne were adamant that the culprit was tap water, not safe to use even for rinsing.
The afternoon was surprising warm
Jodhpur the city itself sprouts like wild mushrooms at the foot of Mehrangarh Fort. The city's prominent colour of blue, paints an undulating canvas of ocean like an oasis in the desert. This changes as the Indian sun sculpts the city with shadows, yielding various intensity of the glowing Brahmin blue.
One of the must do items on my list was to visit a Baoli or Stepwell. The deeper the better. Hidden well in the entrails of Sardar Market, I finally found one albeit a small one. The Indian Baoli is primarily used as water storage. In their blazing summers, the locals would seek refuge from the impossible heat by stepping into a Baoli and at the same time using the space as a social node. With dividing steps craved unto the declining walls of the stepwall, I find it fascinating that a Baoli is in fact an inverse pyramidal space
Exploring Sardar Market during the golden hour was stunning as it was cinematic. Weaving in and out of its labyrinthal bazaars, I thoroughly enjoyed myself getting lost in the tangling passageways revealing hidden surprises like the shoe shop bazaar or the sweets street. My nose being constantly invigorated by wafts of smells, sometimes whimsical sometimes not, brought a whole new level of territories never before ventured.
Masala Spiced Omelette
One discovery led to another, I stumbled upon one of the two highly regarded omelette street stalls and sat myself down for a treat. Chowed down a towering masala butter egg toast that oozed out tangy mayonnaise from the charred but moist masala spiced omelette. Cleaned the palette down with a wash of a chilled fruit beer soda. All in all - only 40 Rs. This one hell of a street snack till today still makes my mouth water!
