Where I stayed
Slept in this morning but checked out the central market along the river. The street leading to the market was lined with firecracker stalls selling all grades of explosives. I remembered just before reaching the market, it rained pretty hard but only for 15 minutes. I thought this must be the prelude to Tropical Storm Wukong aka Quinta, which was making its way towards the Visayas.
Along the main road straddling the river is a hospital precinct where I counted three hospitals and countless pharmacies. In a small pocket space after the market, I stumbled in an outdoor gambling den with roulette wheels and other simpler gambling boards. The gamblers were visibly absorbed in the game. sad thing was that children were placing bets too. One kid was gesturing vividly with his hands like turning a steering wheel in hope that the roulette wheel stopped at his betted number
Anyway, time passed really fast and it was dinner time at Mang Inasal (grilled chicken fast food chain). It must had been a lousy day because I had my grilled chicken served cold. I looked around the tables and I didn't think their meals were hot either. At least the rice and free soup was hot.
Nightlife in Roxas City
Roxas City is quite fun to venture out at night. There were always pockets of people or activities like the crowd shopping at pirated DVD stalls or the fruit stalls along the streets or even the random wet market stalls at 9 pm trying to off load their fishes. At the city square, I bought some dirt cheap siomais (3 for 10 pesos) from this non-descript kisok. I was so awful I had to spit it out but not before I nodded to the lady vendor who asked "Tasty Yes? You like?" The firecrackers came on early at 11 pm but randomly it gained strength towards Christmas day and stretched hours past midnight. Some mild but some sounded like air raid attacks!
