Finally a day to rest and relax. Frankly speaking, all those temple ruins visiting can be quite draining. A pretty late brunch at my now favourite Five Sons restaurant had always been a good choice. Great food, large portions, free fruits and mineral water - cannot beat that!
Decided to explore the eastern side of Siem Reap river on foot. Wandered into Wat Bo by chance and was treated to a band of teenagers practising on the Khmer traditional instruments of gongs and windpipes. Making my way forth in search of a miniature display of Angkor temples, I kept getting lost and found myself going around in circles. There were however frequent stops for street snacks and sugarcane juices. Eventually found the exhibition in a well shaded property. A ticket would cost US$1.50 but after catching a glimpse I decided not to visit as I had seen similar miniature displays a few days earlier at Preah Ko.
As I started heading back towards the river, a row of riverside slums caught my attention. At first glance, my immediate impression was squatter slums. But as it turned out, they were in fact the rear of shophouses lining a backstreet to some of the finest hotels in town. A floodgate further down south stopped all rubbish from entering the rest of Siem Reap where it matters most for the image of Siem Reap.
Dinner with Naseem (who did the Beng Mealea/Roluos circuit today) was a great spread of mango salad, pad thai and beef loc-lak, washed down with copious amounts of draught beer.
