My arrival at Suvarnabhumi airport, Bangkok, was one unnerving experience. Long queues at the customs yet my connecting flight to Chiang Mai was only 50 minutes away from departure. It must have been about 30 minutes before I finally got out of customs, retrieved my backpack and made my way hurriedly to the departure hall. Air Asia slapped me a 428 baht for checked in luggage - damnit! By the time I got to my Chiang Mai departure gate, it was announced a 60 minutes delay. Uncannily like my daily train routine in Melbourne. At least this was chance to grab my lunch at the food court.
Chiang Mai flight was short and painless. It was a cool breezy 6pm evening on my taxi to Rux Thai Guesthouse at the southeast corner of the walled city. Hit the streets as soon as my backpack left my shoulders and wandered through the entire length of Chiang Mai's sunday night market. It was claustrophobia and colours rolled into one. Not to mention the punch of street hawker foods aromating the air. There were obviously left and right lanes for pedestrians (supposedly you walked to the end and returned the opposite direction) before I realised that I was zigzagging against the human traffic, handicrafts stalls, jewellery stalls, toys stalls, the cartoon muppet policeman and most distinctively the blind street musicians, adding to the vibrations of the night.
Finally made my way out the other end for a well deserved prawn pad thai takeaway. And decided a return to the cornfields was not warranted and made my return journey along the southern moat wall with fresh fruits for company. The reward was the discovery of the local street hawker stores along the southern road. Made mental note to have dinner here tomorrow.
