We got an early start and headed to Williamtown at the other end of Stockton sand dunes. We'd decided to walk to a wreck, the Sygna, that sits just off the shore. We were advised against it by the guys at the Tourist Info - they said you could only get there by 4x4 and the walk would take us all day but we were up for the challenge!

We drove as far as Bumblebee could take us, parked up, packed some lunch and headed down the 4x4 track. Good thing we didn't attempt to take Bumblebee, the track soon turned to fine sand - we would have been stuck in minutes! I decided to take a 'detour' up a near vertical sand dune which, after much huffing, puffing and sand in the shoes, got to the top and looked out across miles and miles of sand, a sliver of sea in the distance and not a soul to been! It also knocked a good chunk of our walk! We walked for about 2 hours along the beach, occasionally passing a 4x4 or quad bike on the way but otherwise it seemed we had this gorgeous part of the world to ourselves. The weck was a mirage - we could see it ahead of us but the further we walked the further away it seemed to get! We finally reached the wreck in perfect time for lunch, settled behind a big dune out of the wind and had a rest (walking for that long on soft sand is definitely hard on the calves!). The wreck sits eerily in the water just feet from the shore, golden with rust with huge waves crashing around it, an awesome place to stop. We headed back mid afternoon following our footsteps, well the ones that hadn't been washed away by the turning tide. By the time we got back to the van we were knackered but very pleased with ourselves (a) for proving the Tourist Info guys wrong and (b) for not getting lost in the miles of sand dunes! We drove up the coast just to get a few more k's under our belts before the end of the day and finally stopped at a town called Taree.
