Hat Yai - Gateway to Malaysia
Entry 35 of 37 | show all | print this entry |
It was hammering with rain when we arrived in Hat Yai at about 3pm - the sun had been shining while we were sitting on the bus but a big black cloud sat over Hat Yai as we got closer!
We stumbled into Louis Guesthouse and almost didn't notice the tiny Chinese man behind reception, he was an interesting character! Wide rimmed glasses almost falling off his nose and a world-class combover.
Our room was basic but the photographs in the hallways made up for it - hundreds upon hundreds of claim to fame photos, including one of Elvis with the Thai Royal family - random!
We found a cheap place to catch up on the internet while it was still raining then went to explore the night market which wasn't open. Hat Yai doesn't feel like the safest place in the world at night and the streets aren't very well lit so we wandered back to the main streets to find some dinner. Everything looked pretty dirty and unappealing but we finally found an average looking Halal restaurant. I was happily munching through my fried beef and rice when Will suddenly, without warning, shot about 4 foot in the air! A huuuuuuuge cockroach had decided to climb up his trouser leg! I think he did very well not to shout as you can imagine what a scene I would have caused! He smacked it off his leg and it was MASSIVE! We (quickly) finished our meal and left!
Not surprisingly, we're off again tomorrow - Hat Yai doesn't have much to offer unless you appreciate the insect life!
