The day before we headed off for our Elephant adventure we had received an email from Dada - the neohumanist monk who runs the orphanage we were going to be staying at the next week, supposedly arriving on the 17th - to say that he had "decided to take all the kids on a holiday to the beach"... great! and "would we be able to get there before the 14th else there would be nobody there"... er, oh!
So it was that on our return from the Elephant nature park we were dropped at our guest house and immediately (well after blagging showers in the back of the business next to the guest house) headed out again to the cities' bus station to catch an overnight coach to Bangkok which would allow us to catch an early bus then next morning to Sangklaburi where we had arranged to be picked up by Dada at 5pm.
We arrived at the station bought our tickets, for what we hoped would be one of the almost fully reclining buses we had seen so many of in Vietnam, and had a bite to eat and a couple of beers. (at the time of writing that is still my last beer, nearly a month ago. Stupid antibiotics!)
Unfortunately the bus arrived and although it was very nice it was not the fancy 'bed-bus' we had dreamed of.
With decor that looked like it had been scientifically engineered to be as garish as possible and a proper 'flight' attendant on-board we headed of at about 9.30pm due to arrive in Bangkok at 6am the next day.
After receiving pillows, blankets, water, juice, biscuits, cakes, cookies, tarts and various other delights we settled down at about 11.30 (after the atrocity that is Rush Hour 3 had finally been switched off) to get some much needed shut-eye.
To be woken at 3.00am is annoying.
To be woken at 3.00am when you know that you have to get up at 5.00am anyway is particularly annoying.
To be woken at 3.00am, when you know that you have to get up at 5.00am, just so the passengers on your bus can go to the loo when there is and has always been a toilet on you bus is just stupid!
And then to have the karaoke turned on is just... well... welcome to Asia.
Oh well, we thought, at least in another day or so we'll be at the beach...
...little did we know...
