Where I stayed
Our flight to Idonesia is in 2 stages - originally booked as a 1pm departure from Colombo to Singapore, then 2 hours in transit before flying on to Java. Singapore airlines however decided to change their one flight a day from Sri Lanka to 1am instead (it's ok we did know this before we rocked up at the airport) so we now have the prospect of 15 hours in Singapore. In another city this could have been a complete depressing balls up but Singapre is well set up for these situations - we don't need a visa, can get a hot shower at the airport and make it to the city centre less than 2 hours after landing. This is in thanks to their excellent MRT - a sparkelling speedy version of the London tube.
Singapore sparkles in general it should be noted - a cleaner city would be harded to find. Not only that but rumour has it the taxi drivers actually use their meters! Where are the cows and three legged dogs which should be wandering the roads causing mayhem? Where are the crazy tuk tuk drivers? Why is there not a constant barrage of car horns?
Singapore also seems to be an underground city. We visit the shopping malls
of Orchard Road and are grateful for these subterranean air conned
slices of home - we browse New Look, Gap, Espirit and all the high
street staples of England.
The food courts however are as far removed from our Maccas and KFC usual suspects as you can imagine. Every poissible cuisine is available at incredibly cheap prices. We wish we could have 3 meals and take our time in choosing. Something to look forward to coming back to when we return for a couple of nights at the end of our trip!
In the afternoon we go to the cinema - Avatar in 3D! The film is great to look at and the 3d really effective, but it seems they spent more time on the effects than the plot/ character development. It is however the first film we have seen for about 2 months so for that it gets a 5 star review :)
After a quick wander along the river we catch the MRT back to the airport and board our flight to Jakarta. We have now been awake for 36 hours and counting...
