Another day, another trail, but this one disappoints. Signs to Trails 10 and 11 up the peak of Gunung Jasar are few and mostly absent. After some struggles, dead ends and useless enquiries, Eva and I find the steep trail, but this ends in confusion and a poor set of ruts and a close-up views of pylons. I get the impression that the local tourist agency would prefer the trails to decay and disappear and instead lure visitors to the far more lucrative and less interesting trade in strawberries and tea.
In the town, The food on offer is mostly Chineseand Southern Indian. All looks good and fresh. I dine at the Tamil restaurants where large ovens on wheels roast chickens by the door. My latest acquaintance is the Mutarbak, a thick rectangular pancake with corriander-spiced veg or meat inside and a spicy mint sauce that accompanies the naans. The staff are welcoming and helpful, unlike the wall of confusion and disinterest I met in George Town.
