Passing a birthday in Phuket, I opt for a tour of the Old Town. It's quiet on a
Sunday. Roads are clear, but the markets are half-closed.
Shrewd tuk-tuks from the beaches drop you beside a town guide, but it works out the same price to take the guide as for a return tuk-tuk. This means the family see the large Buddha at Wat Thepkajonjit and the butterfly gardens but, for the sake of the driver getting his petrol coupon we have go in and out a gem factory cum souvenir store.
There are some second-storey remains of Phuket's Sino-Portugeuse architecture but the tour quickly degenerates into shopping opportunities.
