Patong beach, north of where I'm staying in Karon is an overdeveloped grid of Brit/Aus/Irish/Thai girl bars, Scandinavian/German/Italian/Thai Seafood restaurants, Thai/Oil/Foot/Head massage parlours and swimwear shopping opportunities. It could be any beach resort if it were not for the overweight, elderly Westerners being escorted by miniature local women.
Karon is quieter, more family-friendly but it still has its share of the above. It's difficult to find tofu in a seafood centre. Walking around alone, I get the invites to join the other single guys in girly bars, or get a rub-down. The only other option for a relaxing hangout seems to be in the western restaurants with older couples and families.
Some of my own family have arrived for a fortnight in the sun, so I too have two weeks off from carting a backpack about, but there will be little culture to explore here.
