Sunday in Vientiane is a true day off, especially with yesterday's Laos National Day closing many venues, including the museum. It seems only tourists are foolish enough to stroll about in the heat today.
These are my last few hours in Laos. I'm booked on the overnight train back to Bangkok. This means a shuttle to the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, to deal with passport control, then boarding at Nong Khai where the caf?s offer a poor rate for kip in exchange for snacks.
The train's comfortable enough and not crowded, though the fan-only cars get very stuffy without the windows open. The almost-full moon and train windows light up the countryside a little and I catch glimpses of ponds, fields and tracks, the curves of a wat roof, traffic queues at level crossings, and trees to the horizon.
