Walking on the flat in Nepal feels absurd, so I take a walk north of the lake past the padi fields, get caught up in a harvest festival, then head up the hill where the paragliders launch from.
There are annoying numbers of children begging for Fanta, school pens or sweets on the ascent. I stop for a coke and the proprietor tries to sell me pot to "help me sleep" on my imminent rafting trip.
From the top of Sarangkot, I can see the whole of Phewa Tal lake and the river from Phedi that feeds it. To the north, clouds shroud the mountains.
To avoid the craft stalls and taxi touts on a main road back, I take a different path downhill and get lost. Well, I can see distant Pokhara but, as paths disappear and fork, I'm kept from it by dead ends and rice terraces. My legs are stung by nettles, thorns dig into my toes, I slip in a stream I try to follow. A large grey snake slithers across my path. It's an adventure! Fortunately, there are plenty of farming women or children happy to offer me directions across their land, even if they lead me up another blind alley.
I get back to Pokhara a couple of hours later and more ruffled than expected, but in time for an unenthusiastic briefing for tomorrow's rafting trip.
