It's a tough day. We're hit by pellets of snow and my legs feel like lead weights. Three times we hear the rumble of an avalanche on the mountains. We sight a pair of blue sheep.
Tonight I'm sleeping at the highest altitude I've reached in Nepal. Between the two hotels in Letdar (4200m), I feel light-headed. Fortunately it's a sign of over-exertion, not altitude sickness. So far, no other symptoms, but I've another 1200m to ascend in the next couple of days. After lunch Nar suggests we take in more height. (It's wise to sleep lower than your highest altitude.) The dizziness has gone but it's an effort to go the extra 300m above the guesthouse.
It's extremely cold in the lodge. I'm shivering. Other guests cough and sniff. One woman, sick with the altitude, is carried past the windows on mule back. I want to curl up in my sleeping bag and get the next two days over with.
