The trail is busy to Tal (1600m), where the river slows and the path is across white sand uncovered by monsoon waters. I twist my ankle, slipping on a rock. Both ankle joints are now aching but Nar and I are making good progress, reaching what was to be our night stop at Dharapani (1900m) by 11am. I take corn bread and garlic soup while Nar cuts me a pair of walking canes then we press on to Danaqyu.
The path now follows progress on newly cut roads that, when joined, will transform this area, reducing the trail, putting the long-suffering porters out of work and reducing the price of Snickers bars up the passes.
Over night at Danaqyu (2200m), the sky is lit up by a fierce electrical storm. Rain pelts down and, by morning, a freash dusting of snow covers the peaks above us.
