The trip to Essauoira was about 3hrs by bus from Marrakech, and took us to the Atlantic coast with a town of gleaming white buildings as opposed to the clay pink of Marrakech. Here we were met at the bus by someone from the riad, a more encouraging start.

Essaouira is a lot smaller than Marrakech, and it's harder to get lost in the medina; we felt more relaxed already. The goods on sale turned out to be as varied as in Marrakech, and the people less pushy. The sea breeze felt good and we were looking forward to walking the beach.
Perhaps it was the fish soup. Certainly that was what Jen had the first night and she was the first to have gut issues, despite having been very careful really. But she was hit hard enough to miss the beach walk the next day. Fortunately she was well enough on day 3 to walk and see the "castles in the sand" which inspired Jimi Hendrix, and to have the camel ride. Hassan and his trusty camels saved Joy and Jen the walk back to town.

What was really disappointing was the rubbish in the rocks and sand dunes along the beach, but we did enjoy walking, sunbathing, reading and even swimming in the Atlantic. Essauoira is known for windsurfing and there was also the odd kite surfer. A small flat off shore island which has a prison largely protects the beach from any significant swell while there is a good sea breeze.
At Essauoira we met up with John and Melanie for dinner, an extraordinary coincidence which we had established when we ate dinner together in Gloucestershire, that our dates there would mesh. Jen ate less than usual, and in the next few days there were 3 of 4 of us who fell casualty to gut issues. Seems a common problem even when real care is taken with what we eat. Later, and as a postscript, Ash offered the opinion that for sure you are going to get sick in that sort of location so you may as well enjoy the food recklessly along the way.
