Banff and Back on the Road

Finally - we saw wildlife from the highway; a couple of elk, and a coyote. Later we learn the
elk are just as "at home" in Banff as in the park - Banff itself has texas gates (cattle stop), to stop elk entering the town, and the daily newspaper featured an article about planned birth control to limit the population of over 200 elk within 5kms of the tourist town.
Amongst other wildlife, boarders and skiers are still evident downtown, getting off the shuttle bus from a skifield which is still open. Banff is a beautiful little resort town, a bit like Queenstown, and it oozes "Expensive". We stopped long enough for a coffee and to find the little local hospital we think Jono worked at.
We had been warned of serious delays and road closure caused by a mudslide (enormous of course) across the Trans Canada highway on our way back west to Sun Peaks. So we decided to shave some time off our lengthy drive home the next day by making tracks as far as Golden - home to Kicking Horse Ski Field 14 kms up the road. One of these days we will be back to ski these other fields we have passed by in the spring thaw.
