Strolling down Soi 2 off Sukhumvit for 15 minutes, with the end of the street looming and a baptist church the only notable building in site, one begins to wonder if a wrong turn has been taken. Yet to the the right, marking the entrance to a pretty bland four story building is the sign "This is the place your looking for if you know it. Otherwise, you'll never find it."

People often say "It feels like stepping back in time" to describe a place, but I've never found those words more applicable to a place than to the lobby of The Atlanta. The style is 1950's art deco, and instantly you know why people are talking about it. A giant stairway winds its way up behind reception, whilst in the foreground is a circular sofa, with two cats sleeping on it. To the left of the lobby is a writers room, and to the right a small restaurant, which again feels like something straight out of a James Dean film.

This is cheap accommodation at its very best. A quiet location, swimming pool, spacious rooms, hot water, aircon, an extensive vegetarian menu in the restaurant and a zero tolerance policy barring sex tourists and other trouble makers makes it easily the most charming hotel I've ever stayed in. Ironically, it's in the centre of the city I find least appealing of all those I've seen!
