The earliest start of my trip was to be the 4am bus from Antigua over the border to Copan in Honduras. I met a Colombian couple on the bus, who were going to Copan for the day from Guatemala City. That made me feel a little better about my tight schedule, because that was ridiculous! A day drip from 5am until 9pm!
I arrived in Copan at 10am, and had a sleep for a few hours before grabbing a fantastic Churraso Jalapeno steak for lunch. The first thing that struck me about Honduras was the cowboy hats! All the guys were wearing one! Furthermore, every guy had a handgun in his belt. Welcome to Honduras, don't make a move or you'll be shot! The town of Copan was quite nice. Again, the roads were cobblestone, but I didn't spend too long outside because it was so hot. It must have been close to 40 degrees.
The next day I got up early and walked out to the Mayan Ruins, just 20 minutes from my hotel. These ruins weren't as spectacular as those in Tikal, but pretty amazing nonetheless, particularly the stellae and scuplture. I spent about 2 hours wandering through the ruins, but it was so hot that I went to the museum of sculpture to cool down. After lunch I met a crazy dude from the states who was living in Copan. He loved the women of Copan, which I could totally understand as they were gorgeous, but it was his spiel about Bush and how much he hated the States which really cracked me up. Actually the women of Copan rate a second mention, they weren't just gorgeous, they were some of the most beautiful women I had ever seen anywhere in the world!!!
Later that afternoon I met Kath, a young lady with two children who lived in La Ceiba with her husband. She offered to give me a ride the following day to a Jungle Lodge in the Pico Bonito national park, just 20km south of La Ceiba. It sounded fantastic, three days of white water rafting and relaxing in the jungle! I didn't really have much of a choice as Semana Santa meant I would be lucky to get a room at one of the coastal towns, and I certainly wasn't going to get a seat on a bus to the capital.
