Saying goodbye to Federico and Yamelis the next morning, I got a cab out to the bus terminal, where I was beseiged by hawkers trying to offer me a cheap ride to Santa Clara. Still on my own at this stage, and not too confident with my spanish, I opted to pay an extra $5 and just get the bus. The scenery was quite sparse on the 6 hour drive, with the most interesting thing being the baby crocodile I held at our one and only toilet stop!
I was met buy an old guy at the bus station in Santa Clara, who drove me to my casa in a 1952 Chevrolet!!! I couldn't fathom that a car this old could actually move! Even if it was at 5km an hour through the cobblestone streets! My hosts for the night were very different to Federico and Yamelis. Three generations under the one roof, and not a word of english spoken by anyone. At least it would force me to speak spanish!
I spent the afternoon walking out to the Monumento El Che - the final resting place of Che Guevara, and 17 other revolutionaries. I also saw a site where Che and his troops derailed a train carrying hundreds of reinforcments sent to the city by Batista. It was inspiring to just stand in the location where Che and his troops fought. This was the first city to fall in the revolution, and this was where it started. Amazing.
