I'd been planning on swinging by Perth in Western Australia (as opposed to the one in Scotland I'd recently spent two months in) for a couple of years, and I was glad I finally had the opportunity on the way home from Europe. I timed it so I would arrive on the friday evening, giving me the chance to spend a full weekend with my friends Jon and Ruth, and the newest addition to their family, little Max.
Jon met me at the airport, and after grabbing a pizza and catching up with Ruth and Max the two of us went out to the Rosemount Hotel for a gig. It had been some years since I'd seen some Oz hip hop live, but Muph & Plutonic played a good set to remind me of what I'd been missing in my time away.
The following day we went to the centre of Perth for a look around King's Park. Situated on a hill overlooking the city and Swan River, it was a very scenic spot with plenty of wildflowers and native plants. After a coffee and a bit of a wander we spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing at their unit with a few of their friends and a couple of beers.
I was due to fly out on the sunday evening, which gave us plenty of time to see a little more of the city. Rather than stick to Perth, we made our way out to Fremantle, some 20 minutes away. Very different from Perth with its modern buildings, Fremantle retained a lot of it's colonial heritage, and we settled with a pub meal followed by a beer at the famous Wild Creatures Brewery.
I wasn't too keen on seeing much more of the city, content to chill out and spend a bit of time catching up with Jon and Ruth. However, I was impressed with what I saw of the city, and was sure I'd be back. For the time being, it was a good way to cap off two years of travel, and I was both nervous and excited about heading home to Hobart.
