Although I'm not the biggest fan of London, I was looking forward to catching up with some old friends. The initial plan was to spend two nights with my old housemate Erica and her boyfriend Ben before spending a couple of days with Jemima, who I met in Cambodia. Unfortunately things didn't quite work out as planned.
While I was in Spain I received a message from Erica telling me I wouldn't be able to stay with her because of housemate issues. It wasn't too much of a problem, as I arranged to meet up with my old flatmate from Poland, Chris, who I'd stay with for a night. Then on the evening of Erica's birthday party I could stay with another Tassie friend, Longy.
I met Chris at Gatwick airport and we spent the next 24 hours catching up on all that happened over the summer. We had a couple of beers at a central London pub before continuing back at his parents place, where he was staying with his girlfriend Kasia. The following day we decided to be tourists and visit the Science Museum, followed by another beer before I caught up with Longy down in Brixton.
Brixton was a very interesting part of London. I hadn't been here before, and it seemed to operate on a completely different plain to the rest of the city. It wasn't difficult to find Longy and his girlfriend El, and later on we met Erica and Ben and had a fantastic evening at the Brixton Bar and Grill where we celebrated Erica's birthday. It was a night of many pints and reminiscing, as we hadn't been together for some time.
The following day I was meant to meet Jemima, although a lunch time text informed me something was up and she couldn't meet me until the following day. I was a little pissed off, but Longy said it was no problem to stay a little longer, and we spent the evening up in Brick Lane with a top curry.
The next morning brought more bad news from Jemima, this time in the form of no news as my calls and texts went unanswered. Again it was no problem for Longy and El to host, and despite feeling gutted we made the most of the day. Beginning with a coffee in Clapham, we continued on north to meet El and a friend of hers for dinner and a pint. We decided to be tourists for the rest of the evening, jumping on board a Jack the Ripper walking tour of East London. It was pretty interesting to hear the stories at the places where they occured, although the environment had changed so much it was difficult to imagine how it really was back in the late 19th century. Unfortunately the heavens opened and we were soaked during the last section, putting a literal dampener on the evening.
I did have a good couple of days, catching up with Chris and a bunch of friends from Tassie, although I was gutted that Jemima didn't respond and left me high and dry. By the time I boarded my bus for Glasgow on the morning of the 1st of September, I felt like I was well and truly ready to head home.
