With another week come and gone, and Ania heading back to Edinburgh on an excursion, I decided to part ways with EAC for a day and night and head down to Glasgow to catch up with Steve. He had joined a walking club there, and every second weekend they got out and did a hike, usually up a munro, but sometimes they tackled something a little less hardcore. I'd been wanting to join him on a walk for a while, and although they had a relatively easy one planned for the saturday, around the Isle of Great Cumbrae, I thought it was better than nothing.

I arrived in Glasgow on the friday night, and it proved to be a pretty big one as we caught up with an old mate from uni, Cam. The beers flowed and later the whiskey, and before we knew it it had gone 3am. I was feeling it the next morning, and struggled out of the door and up to Central Station for our 9am train.

I managed to see myself off to sleep ok, but was somewhat surprised when Steve woke me 45 minutes later as we were back in Glasgow's central station! For some reason we'd had to turn around, and were stuck waiting another 45 minutes for the next train. Sometime close to 11am we were on our way, and around midday we made it into Largs, the small town where we had to jump onto a Calmac ferry for the Isle of Great Cumbrae.

It was a pretty laid back walk, with the only obstacle the surprisingly humid weather. We did a complete loop of the island, stopping only for lunch in the north west before making it round to Millport, the only town on the island. Strung out a long way around the bay overlooking neighbouring Little Cumbrae, the place seemed to be buzzing, and the number 99 icecream went down very well when we stopped for a break. Probably the most amusing thing I saw there was a fight between two local football teams having a game on the small ground. Football on the Scottish Isles was anything but a friendly affair!

The walk and scenery weren't particularly inspiring, although it was a nice break from the EAC crew and I met some interesting people on the walk, most of whom were teachers! We had about 40 minutes to wait for our train back to Glasgow from Largs, so we stopped in a small pub for a quick pint to wind down. I'd taken Ania's camera with me, but somehow the button on it broke off at some point, unbeknown to me, which seemed to epitomise how I felt about the day. Nevertheless, it was another part of Scotland I hadn't seen, although despite enjoying the walk I couldn't see myself returning to their.
