It is New Years Eve. I was supposed to be at a black tie party aboard a cruise and I am now in BA alone with no idea what I am going to do. I dress in my best backpackers garb (Rob was bringing my tux). I am lucky and find out about the Buenos Aires Philharmonic providing a concert in the park overlooking the BA Obelisk. It is mostly tango including a dance performance and musical appearances by well known artists (to the audience). Great music in a pretty setting. It is being simulcast to Europe. Over at 9:30. I watch all the couples. It is at these moments when I feel most lonely.
Since I missed lunch, I am starving. Restaurants everywhere are closed. I head to the waterfront where I had seen restaurants preparing for dinner. They are all booked. I even try TGI Fridays (please forgive me) which is also full.
I need food and I need a drink. Maslow's hierarchy has these ahead of fireworks. Back in the center, all restaurants and bars are closed. Don't they know that there is huge demand at highly inflated prices. Even Kilkeny which is supposed to be the most popular bar is shut. Business does not seem to be the driving force.
2 blocks from my hotel, I find a convenience store that is closing (it is 11). No alcohol so I get diet coke, crackers and Oreos for dessert. As I approach my hotel, I hit the jackpot - a low end Chinese buffet. I go for it. Food is just edible but I need something. Champagne served at midnight. Just me and the interesting characters who have no better place to go. I am in bed by 12:30.
