Our arrival in Adelaide signalled a long-awaited reunion with Alex and Andrew Siwka who we were friends with in Brazil.  They now live in Melbourne but Alex very kindly offered to put us up at her parents house and took some time off work to meet us there.

We arrived at the house mid-morning, pulling into Alex's parents really gorgeous place, in a very smart part of Adelaide.  It was SO good to see Alex....I met up with her in 2007 when I was over in Australia for Lucy's wedding but Brad hadn't seen her since she left Brazil in 2005.

We duly made ourselves comfortable, then Alex and I hit the shops of King William Road, just round the corner for some much-needed girly time.   Adelaide has really surprised us - all the houses in Unley Park are old properties, dating back to the 1850s, many of them made from old stone with beautiful old verandahs.  Sue and Ross Dillon have a truly stunning home with beautiful gardens, and Sue is missing her true vocation in life as an interior designer - her house was just gorgeous, a beautiful mix of antiques and modern stuff.

Not only did Sue and Ross make us all feel very at home, but they were also happy for Alex to host a birthday barbecue for Zach and Alex's god-daughter Ruby who both turn 5 this week.  So, Wednesday was spent preparing for the evening when Alex invited what must have been about 6 couples and around 9 children round.  Sue was probably the most chilled out mother I have ever met, and seemed to love the opportunity to catch up with Alex's old school friends and all their children.

Alex very kindly looked after all 3 kids for a couple of hours earlier in the day so that Brad and I could have a coffee on our own which was much appreciated, and Alex quickly endeared herself to them by whipping up a chocolate birthday cake for Zach and Ruby which we decorated half with Star Wars figures and half with flowers.  Then Alex raced around making salads, sorting out the barbecue etc until the guests started arriving around 5ish.

We all had a really great evening - Alex's friends were a great bunch and the children all seemed to get on well.  Zach was keen to play party games, so Brad took on the role of party entertainer and organised musical bumps, musical chairs, pass the parcel, dead lions and 40 40 in the dark - the firm kiddies favourite.  Zach had a really fun evening, topped off by everyone loving his star wars cake and him handing out his much-loved party bags full of more chocolate, sweets etc than he could have imagined.

Andrew arrived from Melbourne late in the evening - great to see him after all these years - so more wine was drunk and plans put in place for tomorrow:  Zach's Actual Birthday and our relocation to the Dillon's beach house in Port Eliot down on the coast.

Adelaide gets a bit of a bum rap in Australia but we found it a delightful city, with a lovely small but old centre, great shopping and beautiful residential areas occupied by very laid back people. The place definitely gets the thumbs up from us.
