We had a wonderful walk on Sorrento back beach (the open ocean side), which has some of the most amazing huge rock pools we've ever seen, as well as beautiful sandstone cliffs. It was a very English-y morning, poking around the rock pools, and the boys stripped off for a swim in one of them, setting a trend amongst the other kids.
After another supermarket shop we headed to the Portsea Hotel for lunch which was just great, a big pub garden facing onto the Philip Bay side, where the children could run free and climb the trees while we enjoyed our drinks....
The weather got better and better as the day went on so late afternoon was spent enjoying the sun on the lovely verandah of the house watching the boys playing in the garden. We even managed dinner outside....
Monday: Up early to see Portsea back beach. Another great walk. Benji is sleeping well in his new sling which is somewhat more than a baby bjorn but much more transportable than a baby rucksack. The weather got better again all day and so after a large brunch in Sorento we headed to the Portsea heads which housed the Quarantine facilities for the state of Victoria and only stopped functioning in 1977!
The Heads also housed some of Australia's fortifications that included large guns and tunnels which the boys loved. Somewhat amazingly the facility is home to gun emplacement number 6 which fired the first allied shot of World War 1 and unbelievably the first Australian shot of World War 2.
The heads also witness one of the biggest rip tides in the world as the whole Melbourne bay - Port Philip Bay, a huge bay, empties and fills on every tide through a gap just 2 miles wide which is very visible at peak flow. Off tomorrow on the Queenscliff ferry and back to the campervan.
Sunday: Patrick and Sarah's place is just fantastic. Thank goodness for Portsea, and I am so grateful to Patrick and Sarah for lending us their house. Everyone is much happier today, the weather is dry and the kids have loved playing in the garden on the trampoline, swings, tennis court and in the pool.
