Ngapoli and surrounding area specialises in dried fish which is used as a base for lots of Burmese and South East Asian dishes. The fishing boats go out at night, returning in the morning to the beach right outside our hotel. They women then set about laying the tiny fishes out on blue netting overlying straw and wait for the blisteringly hot sun to do its job. Consequently the beach hums of fish
We borrow bicycles from the hotel to cycle to the local restaurants and shops. The largest frame is a 27 inch so a bit like a scooter for big Jonny. We pick up supplies from a shack, namely beer and gin and the proprietor takes it upon himself to reassure me that the gin is OK and anyway, gin is the same as vodka, made the same. Cue 15 minute lecture from Dr Welch on the difference between gin and vodka, pictures in the sand, charades etc. Don't think he'll be making that error again.
Breakfast is wonderful. We've been eating two eggs for breakfast everyday since arriving, with other meals averaging 34 eggs a week between us! They are always cooked absolutely perfectly. Yoma Cherry Lodge is the first place that has offered proper coffee and we're not used to it. Most cafes sell sachets of something called coffeemix, an all in one drink which we have become hopelessly addicted to. The ingredients list says sugar, creamer and coffee although I suspect there is a negligible amount of coffee in it. So when real roast coffee is served we throw our toys out of the pram and fetch a couple of sachets from the catering sized pack of Birdy's coffeemix we bought in Mandalay.
Three and a half days is over in a flash and we don't want to leave.
