After being turned away from Robben Island (sold out) and Table Mountain (too wet, windy and cloudy), how is one to spend a saturday afternoon in Capetown... a winery visit, of course. So it was off to Paarl - it seemed as good as anywhere else, and was on the highway.
The town itself is quaint, but the wineries are the main attraction - and most of them are works of art. Centuries old Dutch mansions in fields of vines turning gold and red in the Autumn. One small problem - its hard to find one open to the public on a Saturday afternoon. They're all either closed for a function, closed for no apparent reason, or about as welcoming as the US border from the Mexican side.
After (maybe) being snapped by a speed camera (go on Western Cape highway patrol, see if you can find me), it was off to Fairview, being a reasonable looking place that had a full car park
As it turns out, its a real mindmash - the entrance features a tower, straight out of Shrek, being climbed by four goats. The wines, which are superb, are a colossal piss-take on the french - 'Goats do Roam', 'Bored Doe', and my fvaourite, 'Goat-Rotie'.
I also thought my braised lamb shank was delicious, but given the length of time I spent vomiting it back up 3 hours later, I may have to review that opinion.
Just to complete the fairy tale illusion, a rainbow popped up on cue as we were leaving.
